HÖHR-GRENZHAUSEN – Germany

The city of Höhr-Grenzhausen is a competence and creative center of German ceramics with international significance. Beautifully located, in the middle of Germany, high above the river Rhine just a stone‘s throw from Koblenz (10 km) in the lower Westerwald opens up in Höhr-Grenzhausen the whole range of pots, tureens, plates and cups from the beginnings of the well-known traditional gray / blue design over the modern color and shape variety to today‘s ceramic art objects.

The Keramikmuseum Westerwald is one of the largest museums for ceramics in Europe. It has a unique position in the museum landscape with its special combination of art, craftmanship and local history. It is a meeting place where art, crafts, technology and education, history and future come together and connect with each other. Embark on a journey through time and discover the immaterial cultural heritage of the so called “Kannenbäckerland”.

Monika Debus has had her own studio since 1993 and has been working intensively with the formal language of the ceramic vessel since then. Her work primarily focuses on painting and, secondarily, on building a form. She strives to align her simple way of painting with a straightforward slab-building technique. Through low-temperature salt firing, the matte surface of her creations takes on subtle hints of salt, which in turn alter and modulate the colors across a spectrum from light to dark. This firing technique makes brush strokes visible, adding an element of unpredictability to the final result. The influence of salt can be anticipated only to a certain extent, sometimes enhancing a piece while at other times potentially leading to its destruction. Monika Debus fires her pieces in a gas kiln at 1140°C in a reducing atmosphere.

Andreas Hinder has been making ceramic objects in his studio in Höhr-Grenzhausen since 1994. Since then, numerous animal sculptures have left Andreas Hinder s workshop in Brunnenstraße and found new homes. They stand on shelves, guard passageways, serve as candle crocodiles for table lighting, or simply sit quietly on their pedestals. They are large, coarse, and rough and have to stay outside or they are small, fine, and delicate and are allowed inside. They are not realistic replicas of nature, but rather street cruisers of all genres of animal representation: influenced by myths and fables of ancient cultures as well as by images of art history or icons of modern comic language. In Andreas Hinder s workshop, they melt into independent beings that want to conquer the heart of their new owners. The material ceramic always plays a decisive role.
