The Manises Ceramics Museum came into being around the 1960s to exhibit the art and ceramics objects bequeathed to the Town Hall by José Casanova Dalfó and Pilar Sanchis Causa. It is housed in the 18th century manor house that this couple had as their leisure residence in Manises, which is also included in the bequest. The Manises Ceramics Museum has a collection of more than 5,500 pieces with a chronology ranging from the 14th to the 20th century, ninety percent of which are locally produced works with decorations in green and manganese, cobalt blue and blue and gold metallic lustre.

Regional and national ceramics associations are very active in the city. The Valencian Ceramics Association, AVEC-GREMIO, represents the industrial entrepreneurs and craftsmen of the ceramics sector in the Valencian Community. It is the merger of the 15th century Manises ceramic craftsmen’s guild. Currently, AVEC-Gremio adapts to the demand of individuals and professionals by offering courses and workshops for all ages and levels, both beginners and advanced.

ANPEC was founded in 1933 and represents Spanish ceramic craftsmen. It was born with the intention of defending the interests of ceramists, both in the technical and artistic fields, to collaborate and advise public and private entities on matters related to the profession, and to encourage the solidarity of its members, promoting or creating common services of a welfare nature (exhibitions, courses, workshops, etc.). During its more than 25 years of life, ANPEC has worked hard to be recognised as a leading association in the promotion of ceramics.

The Manises International Ceramics Biennial is one of the most significant cultural events in our city, organised by the Manises City Council, and It’s an international competition of contemporary ceramics. The importance of this competition lies in the opportunity to make ceramics known as a material with new artistic possibilities and to disseminate a singular form of plastic expression that had fewer possibilities within contemporary art. Edition after edition, the Biennial manages to highlight the value of signature ceramics as a means of artistic expression and as a design product.

The weekend before 19 July, the city of Manises shows all its visitors the process of making ceramic craftsmanship. The artisans leave their workshops during these days and take to the streets to show us their art. During the Festa de la Ceràmica there’s the opportunity kinds of techniques and procedures that turn clay into an object of craftsmanship.

The Escola d’Art i Superior de Ceràmica, Manises (EASC) is a public centre engaged in the teaching of plastic arts and design, belonging to the Institute of Artistic Teaching of the Valencian Community (ISEACV), and is accountable to the Valencian Government. It currently offers a degree in ceramics and higher level vocational training in artistic ceramics. The initially so-called “Practical School of Ceramics of Manises” became operational in October 1916 as the first centre (and, for many years, the only one) in Spain offering a degree in Ceramics. The qualification combines the creativity and most appropriate technological knowledge necessary for transforming ceramic materials.
